First Tomato of 2008

by Frank Roche on August 10, 2008

Behold the beauty of the first heirloom tomato from my garden this year. It’s an exquisite, lopsided 2lb beauty from a variety called Goliath. I’m going to have a tomato sandwich today. White bread. Mayonnaise. And that sweet, sweet vine-ripened tomato. The first one from the vine.

A tomato sandwich? No Bacon? Just tomato? That must be how you keep your girlish figure! ;)

I might just throw a couple of slices on there with the tomato…hmmmm, could a BLT be far behind? Sheryl cooked up some bacon with our breakfast this morning. Yay.

Beautiful. I’ve got 4 or 5 ripe Wisconsin 55′s right now, as well as a couple Hillbilly’s. Love the heirlooms… Hope your sandwich was as good as it sounds.

Don’t waste that tomato in a sandwich!!!

Chop it up into nice thick pieces, and then put it in a bowl with some olive oil. Then cut up some fresh mozzarella cheese and add it, finally sprinkle with some fresh basil and garlic salt. Cover the bowl and let it sit for several hours (room temp), and then dig in!

Sop up the oil with some good Italian bread.

Pretty photo! I envy your beautiful garden. My fav sandwich during summer is tomato and cucumber.

Dave, I just knew you’d be growing some heirlooms!

Pax, that’s going to be the plan for the next batch. Sounds like an Italian feast.

Jessica, that sounds great…sweet and crunchy. I’m hoping to have enough tomatoes to try out lots of things!

That is beautiful! Nothing like homegrown tomatoes (a Guy Clark song). We’re growing only David-sized ones this year; the two biggest varieties are San Marzano and Juliet, both of which are small. Enjoy!!
