Hitting My Knees

No, not that kind, although I should more often. This is about sneezing.

I’ve heard of people who said when they had a back injury and sneezed it brought them to their knees. That happened to me today.

I sold my motorcycle, and today the guy came to get it. I helped by riding the bike onto the trailer. I hobbled off while Matt and Steve helped the guy. I sat on the curb. After about an hour, I asked the guy if he’d like a soda. He said yes, and I hobbled like a little old man up the driveway. Then I felt it coming.

ACHOO!

And just like that, I went from hobbling to hitting my knees. That was uncomfortable because it was in the middle of my driveway, and my back was in one massive spasm. I spent all my energy fighting off another sneeze.

So, here I sit with pillow propping me up. I ate an 800 mg ibuprofen. And I ache like a motherf****er. I’ve gone to 3 sessions with the chiropractor, and I’m still as bad as when I started.

This getting old things sucks. Did I mention that?

  • Ouch! Frank, I hope you get through this soon. I hear ya on the getting old point. As Bette Davis once said, "Getting old isn't for sissies." And she was right! Here's hoping this will be behind you very soon.
  • The Tuna
Lets hope this is nothing serious. I seem to heel up faster if I put some ice on the area and then follow up with some heat, repeating every couple hours. Also with all my aches and pains I tend to frequently seek a hot bath with epson salt. Also had to start incorporating some stretching before bed. Your right though, getting old sucks.
  • Hey, Tuna, I was thinking this was going to be one of those easy ones -- hurt like heck for a few days, then go away. It's still here, 10 days later. And I still feel pretty weak back there. This morning I sneezed again when I walked the dog, and the twinge came back. I go to the chiro again tonight. I'm going to talk through a more aggressive approach and see what he says.

Yep, I need to do more stretching. I'm doing that now, that's for sure. I have to stretch for 10 mins, 3X a day for my back. I think it would do me good to do what you do and stretch before bedtime (and before I get up). It's that getting old part I can't solve for.
  • Ouch, I feel your pain. Similar thing happened to me several days after my hernia operation ... I thought I ripped a stitch open.

Brother, it's time to look into some good drugs ... I mean, just to dull the pain ... or at the very least, a good stiff drink!

My bad back episode from a few years back, lasted about a week and a half. It was pretty miserable, but believe it or not, you'll get better.
  • Pax, that would be bad. You would have laughed to see me on my knees on my driveway trying to hold back a sneeze while holding my back. I'm glad to hear about a week-and-a-half. That gives me a little hope. I'm stayed prone for a day now...and going to do that today as well. Hoping that works and I end up with new material. This "my back hurts" meme is no fun anymore.
  • How will you outrun the bulls if you can't outrun the aging process???

    Feel better soon!
  • You're right, Laurie. I can't even outrun a 3-toed sloth right now.
