Day Two SXSW 2010

by Frank Roche on March 14, 2010

There’s a place called “Frank” in Austin. I understand they have the best hotdogs in Texas. If you’re the betting type, you can go ahead and safely plunk down your money on “He’s going there.”

The day started out with a panel of movie directors talking about making horror films. From there, I watched a bunch of stuff get blown up. Then a meeting with my buddy Loren and the great folks at 1938 Media. Then a live taping of This Week in Startups at Six. Jason Calacanis had Tony Hseih, CEO of Zappos, as his guest. He also had Loren Feldman doing the Shel puppet. That was the highlight of the show.

Then I met up with Shawn and Andy and Andy’s lifelong friend, Amanda. Amanda lives in Austin and took us to an authentic Texas Bar-B-Q place called Rudy’s. There were hundreds of people in line to buy their meat, which you can buy by the half-pound. It’s served on wax paper, which they called “Texas china.” It was outstanding. Besides the slow-smoked brisket — moist or lean — they also have super tasty cole slaw, creamed corn, and potato salad. When you’re a first timer like me, they all cheer and say welcome. Then they let you taste everything on the menu. Seriously. Even though there were 200 people behind me in line they let me taste everything. And it was beyond good. We need a Rudy’s in Philly.

That ended Day Two at SXSW. I hit the hay early. Good thing, since the maid accidentally set my alarm for 5am today. Okay, off to the show.
