Day Five SXSW 2010

Day Five was a big day. I got to see films back-to-back.

First up was Erasing David. It’s about privacy in the day of the internet and video cameras. Here’s the deal: You don’t have any privacy. The biggest line came from the actor/director from the film during the Q&A: Using Gmail is like letting the post office steam open your envelope, read your letter, highlight all the parts where you expose your likes and dislikes, and then reseal the envelope and send it to your intended recipient. Crazy, huh? He doesn’t use Facebook anymore either. (They had security experts in the room who say the CIA is looking. I’m not being all conspiracy theory…it was pretty persuasive.)

The second film I saw — I walked directly over to the Ritz, where Andy and Shawn had saved me a place in line — was Cold Weather. It was a very interestingly-paced film. Calm. Strange implied brother-sister romance. Very well done by an indie film crew that did it in 15 days (and they did a Q&A afterwards).

I also attended a session on Getting Your Company Funded. I’m looking into that for a really huge idea Sarah and I have. I got to talk to a couple of VCs. Then I moved on to a session called QR Codes and 2D Barcodes: Bridging Physical & Digital. We’ve already developed some QR codes for IFRACTAL, but these things are going to be everywhere soon.

Good side of the day: Two really cool movies. Downside: Rain. Massive bummer: I lost my iPhone charger and had a dead phone. Plus I had to take a taxi across town to buy a new one. Cost me $20 in taxi rides. Ugh.
