Movies and music. Yeah, that was Day Six.
First up, World’s Largest. In the film, an 87-year-old man from Iowa says, “Only one person in a hundred knows the lyrics to the Iowa Corn Song.” Then he sings, “That’s where the tall corn grows.” Sheryl knows the song. So do I. I got kinda emotional about that. Here’s a description of the film:
Desperate for tourism, hundreds of small towns across the U.S.A. claim the “world’s largest” something from 15-foot fiberglass strawberries to 40-foot concrete pheasants. Odd, funny and sometimes beautiful, the statues stand as testaments to the uniqueness and importance – the largeness – that all people feel, and need to feel, about their communities and their own existence.
It was really sad. The film makers said during the Q&A that they were witnessing the end of small town America. They said it’ll be gone in 15 years.

Then I went to listen to a bunch of acoustic music in ACC. Some of it was tremendous. After that, I went to the capstone film of the conference. It was my absolute favorite.
The film, Cherry, was the story of a young man in a mixed up world. It was so fabulous I hope they find a distributor and get that one in major release. I think it’ll do some great things.

Finally, I watched about 10 different bands play on 6th Street. Then the St. Patrick’s Day thing started to get out of hand and I decided to pack it in early. There’s lots more music to come — no sense being out on Amateur Night.
