One of the best predictors of job satisfaction (what HR people call “engagement”) is having a best friend at work. I thought the picture below summed up what real friendship is about. It’s about doing nice things now and long into the future. With no request for anything in return.
(Another way to look at it: A friend is someone who will help you move. A real friend is someone who will help you move a body.)
Do what you can to encourage real friendships at work.
And don’t forget to pick up your friends at the airport. Or wherever.

A year ago, Sarah was just released from Neurological Intensive Care after hitting her head and getting a severe brain injury. What a difference a year makes.
Here’s Sarah at Fenway Park last week. Today’s her birthday. Happy birthday, Sarah.

My buddy Rich Mennenoh has had a great nickname for 30+ years. It was back in the old Chicago mobster days, when everyone who was getting arrested had great nicknames. We laughed about that, and because of his Italian heritage on his mother’s side, we started calling him by a nickname: The Tuna. (In Chicago, that’s pronounced Da Too-nuh.) It stuck. I love great nicknames.
Fast forward to this morning. I laughed when I saw there was a mob sweep of the boys with the greatest nicknames in all of Philadelphia Mafiosi:.
Mob Monikers
Vincent “Elmo” Amarante
Thomas “Tommy Sneakers” Cacciopoli
Domenico “The Greaseball” Cefalu
John “Jackie the Nose” D’Amico
Vincent “Vinnie Hot” Decongilio
Joseph “Joe Gag” Gaggi
John “Johnny Red Rose” Pisano
Richard “Fat Richie” Ranieri
Michael “Mike the Electrician” Urciuoli
Man, I need a cool nickname.

Howard has moved to a new home at Nonbreaking Space. Those of you who like a little HTML humor will enjoy how he titled his new blog. His layout is unique — I’ve never seen one like this.
In addition to his cool new blog, check out Howard’s creative writing, too. He’s the Haiku Master of Philadelphia. This is one of my faves.

My buddy, The Tuna, is blogging over at The Rich Mennenoh Cycling Experience. He’s written some really great articles about his cycling experiences — he’s been cycling competitively for years — and I’m delighted to see him blogging. Head on over and say hi to him. (Remember what it was like when you got your first comments?) Throw him some linky love if you have that in your little bloggy heart.
