Surround Sound

in Frank's World

The basement is finished. Finally.

This weekend marked the official completion of The Basement Project. It ends the months of workmen traipsing through our house. It ends the months of having a basement’s worth of stuff piled in the garage. And it ends watching TV anywhere but in the basement.

The Devil’s in the Details
This weekend The Big Dog came over and helped me do the final wiring on the surround system. Now, I almost got it right. Before the drywall was put up I pulled stereo wires through the walls so that everything looked professional. And stealthy. As in…I forgot to label the wires.

So, there was a tiny amount of testing that had to go on to find out which wire went to which speaker. Check. There was linking the Bose speakers to the Onkyo receiver. Check. There was hooking in a new Comcast Digital DVR. Check.

Keep on Rockin in the Free World
Then we were rocking the house. We did the proper audio checks to balance the speakers. Adjusted the sound. Then sat back and rocked our world.

Bummer, though. We have other TVs in our house. A couple of them are conventional TVs. You know, the kind they used to have before TVs were designed to hang on a wall? Well, they were good….right up until we got the plasma with HDTV. Man, what a difference. And with the surround sound…astonishing.

This Is Your American Idol
Bring on American Idol, baby. Especially the Bad Singers episodes, where we’ll be able to see every large pore and hear every off-key note. Um maybe I should stick with the old TVs for that.
