I’m Giving Up Bread for Lent

by Frank Roche on February 6, 2008

Sliced Bread

You know what’s better than sliced bread? More sliced bread.

I love bread. Any kind. I was raised on Wonder Bread, that started my downfall. So, I’m going to try a little experiment. I’m going to try to not eat bread for Lent. I know, it’s not a big sacrifice for some, but for me it’s a big deal. I gave up my favorite food — cheeseburgers — over four months ago and don’t feel even a tinge of desire. I’ve had my last burger, I’m going to see if I can do something similar with bread. (Or at least a variation on it.)

I’ll let you know how it goes in 40 days when I return from the Gluten Desert. I’m sure there will be many temptations along the way.

Sarcasmom, it’s that old fashioned Catholic thing…it’s about denial. I LOVE bread…any kind. I’m crazy for it. People were joking today that I had given it up for 90 minutes. That’s pretty funny…I’m god today…we’ll see how well I do for 6 weeks. I’m going to give it the old college try. I have to think differently. I had salad today…that’s one way.

Frank, I am new to your blog my Dad turned me onto it. Love the Obama clip. Giving up bread that is tuff. I decided to give up chocolate I hope I succeed, I have a feeling that it will be harder than the chicago marathon.

Hi, Mike! I’m glad you’re reading along.

I’m so digging what you and your dad do with the bike racing…and now I have a way to follow along. That’s so cool.

Yep, giving up bread is tough…I’m way into it…and I have a waist to show for it. Ugh…let’s see what six weeks without bread looks like. Then again, if I exercised and trained like you guys I could eat all the bread I want. Ain’t gonna happen…so I have to go with the bread boycott.

I adore a good bread. Mostly, I eat the whole grain kind these days, fore swearing white bread.

Maidy, thank you for picking up the slack. ;-)

Pinky Bear, I’m with you. I’m gonna go off bread for 39 more days, then start with more whole grain.

Bread is a monumental thing for most folks to forego. A while back I started eating a lot less of it, but it seems inevitable from time to time.
